Course Overview

General Purpose Rating Course to become a Seaman

The above program is approved by Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India. The design of the course is as per the guidelines laid down by the Directorate, in the 6 Months training at institute, approved by Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India.

The candidate is familiarized with various aspects in workshop comprising of Carpentry, Plumbing, Machine Shop, Electrical Shop and Hot Work, ship maintenance, mooring, Anchor Handling, ship International Codes for signal, Navigation Watch. Candidate is also required to complete mandatory STCW courses.

On successful completion of the 6 months Pre-Sea Training, candidate undergoes the sea.

What is G.P. Rating Sponsorship?

G.P. Rating Sponsorship is generally a selection opportunity offered by a shipping company before a candidate joins an approved G.P. Rating training programme. The selection process may include an online examination or company test, interview and medical evaluation. Selected candidates may receive a sponsorship letter from the company.

Written Exam Preparation

RAG coaching focuses on the commonly tested areas of G.P. Rating sponsorship examinations.

  • English: Grammar, clauses, active/passive voice, direct/indirect speech, error correction, synonyms, antonyms and reading comprehension.
  • Mathematics: Time, speed and distance, time and work, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, pipes and cisterns and other arithmetic fundamentals.
  • Physics: Units and measurements, motion, laws of motion, work and energy, electricity, magnetism and electromagnetism.
  • General Knowledge: Basic geography, major international sea routes, famous shipping canals and international maritime days.
  • Aptitude & Reasoning: Blood relations, pattern classification, figure matrices, paper folding/cutting and related reasoning topics.

Interview Preparation

Candidates receive interview preparation through mock interviews and communication practice. Training covers common technical and HR-related questions, confidence building and professional presentation.

Psychological & Medical Guidance

Candidates may receive guidance for psychological assessments conducted by sponsoring companies. The coaching also prepares students for the medical requirements applicable to Merchant Navy candidates, including examinations conducted by DG Shipping-approved medical practitioners.

Study Material & Test Series

The course includes structured study material and a comprehensive test series designed to provide regular practice, help candidates understand the examination pattern and identify areas requiring improvement.

6-Month G.P. Rating Training

After completing the applicable selection and admission requirements, candidates can join the 6-month G.P. Rating pre-sea training programme at an approved maritime training institute.

Career Progression & Salary

Career progression depends on sea service, qualifications, examinations, rank, vessel type, employer and applicable regulations. Indicative salary ranges mentioned for the industry are:

Requirements

  • Qualification:
    • 10th Pass: Minimum 40% aggregate marks in 10th Standard with Science and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. You must also have at least 40% marks in English.
    • ITI Pass: 2-year ITI course approved by DVET/NCVT with at least 50% aggregate marks in the final year. Must have 40% marks in English in 10th or 12th Standard.
    • Diploma/Degree: Any recognized State/Central Government diploma or degree, along with 40% aggregate marks in 10th Standard, including Mathematics and Science, and 40% marks in English.
  • Age Limit:
    • General: 17.5 to 25 years at the time the course commences.
    • Relaxation: +5 years for SC/ST, +3 years for OBC, and +2 years for female candidates.
  • Medical & Physical Standards:
    • Vision: 6/6 unaided vision in the better eye, 6/9 in the other eye, and absolutely no color blindness.
    • Physical: Minimum height of 157–160 cm and a BMI below 25.
    • Fitness: Must pass a strict medical examination by a DG Shipping-approved doctor.
